Petrol in a Diesel Vehicle: Damage Timeline and Workshop Recovery

What happens when petrol goes into a diesel tank, why you must not drive, and how EEK's tow-to-workshop recovery works.

What happens when petrol enters a diesel engine

Diesel fuel does more than burn — it lubricates the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors. Petrol acts as a solvent, stripping that lubrication almost immediately. The result is metal-on-metal contact inside precision components that are engineered to tolerances measured in microns. Damage begins within moments of the engine running, not hours later.

The damage timeline

In the first seconds after starting, petrol thins the diesel and reduces lubrication across the pump and injectors. Within minutes, friction generates heat and microscopic metal particles begin circulating through the system. Over a short drive, those particles can score the pump, block injectors, and contaminate the entire fuel circuit. The longer the engine runs, the more components are exposed — and the more substantial the repair bill becomes.

Why you must not drive

Every metre travelled on contaminated fuel spreads the problem further. What might begin as a recoverable misfuel can escalate into pump and injector replacement once the engine has been run. If you have already started the vehicle, switch it off as soon as it is safe to do so and leave it where it stands. Do not attempt to restart it, and do not add more diesel in the hope of diluting the petrol — this does not reverse the damage already underway.

How EEK's recovery works

EEK dispatches a tow truck to your location — whether that is a forecourt, roadside, home, or car park. Our team collects your vehicle and transports it to a NZIFDA-certified workshop. Manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed only at the workshop, where the correct equipment and procedures are in place. This is not a roadside fix: the vehicle is recovered properly, in a controlled environment, to the manufacturer's specification.

What to do right now

Stop the engine, remove the keys, and move yourself and any passengers to a safe area. Note the vehicle's location and whether it was driven after refuelling. Then call our customer hotline on 0800 769 000. We will arrange vehicle collection and keep you informed throughout the workshop recovery.

Understanding the cost

Recovery is fully itemised, and costs vary by tow distance, after-hours timing, and the vehicle involved. For a clear breakdown, see our rate card. If the engine was run on contaminated fuel, any component repairs are separate from the recovery invoice and can be substantial — which is why acting quickly matters.

If you have put petrol in a diesel vehicle, do not drive it. Call 0800 769 000 and we will arrange collection and workshop recovery, with itemised pricing available on our rate card.
