Finding milky, creamy, or frothy oil on your dipstick is one of the most serious warning signs your engine can give you. This discolouration means water has mixed with your engine oil, creating an emulsion that looks like chocolate milk or coffee with cream. While alarming, understanding what's happened and taking immediate action can save your engine from catastrophic damage.

Water contamination destroys oil's lubricating properties instantly. When water mixes with engine oil, it creates a substance that cannot protect moving parts from metal-on-metal contact. Running an engine with contaminated oil will cause bearings to seize, pistons to score, and internal components to weld together from friction and heat.

The three most common causes we see at EEK are head gasket failure, coolant system leaks, and flood damage. Head gasket failure allows coolant to leak directly into the oil galleries, often accompanied by white smoke from the exhaust and overheating. Coolant system leaks from cracked cylinder heads or damaged intake manifolds create similar contamination. Flood damage occurs when vehicles drive through deep water or are caught in flooding, allowing water to enter through the air intake or other openings.

What to do right now: Stop driving immediately. Do not start the engine again, even to move the vehicle a short distance. Water-contaminated oil can destroy an engine within minutes of operation. If the engine is already running, turn it off safely and pull over as soon as possible. Check your coolant reservoir – if it's empty or very low, this confirms coolant is leaking into the oil system.

Do not attempt to drive to a workshop or service station. The engine needs immediate professional attention, including complete oil system drainage, flushing, and contamination source repair before it can safely run again.

EEK Mechanical specialises in exactly this type of emergency. We'll dispatch a tow truck to collect your vehicle 24/7 and transport it directly to a certified workshop equipped for water contamination recovery. Our technicians will drain the contaminated oil, flush the entire system, identify and repair the water source, and ensure your engine is properly protected before restart.

Time is critical with water contamination. Call EEK on 0800 769 000 immediately for emergency recovery and professional contamination treatment. We're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because engine emergencies don't wait for business hours.
