Bearing wear and head gasket failure can contaminate engine oil and cause progressive engine damage. Learn the warning signs and why early detection matters.

When engine oil stops looking like clean amber lubricant and turns milky, gritty, or discoloured, it is usually a sign that a mechanical issue is already underway. Two common causes in New Zealand vehicles are bearing wear and head gasket failure. Both contaminate the oil in ways that accelerate engine damage, which is why early detection matters.

Bearings inside an engine are soft metal surfaces designed to carry rotating components on a thin film of oil. As bearings wear, they shed fine metallic particles into the oil. That metal debris then circulates through oil galleries and acts like a mild grinding paste against crankshaft journals, camshaft lobes, and turbocharger bearings. Over time, clearances open up, oil pressure drops, and the oil film can no longer protect the parts it was designed to cushion. The damage tends to compound quietly until a knock, rattle, or sudden failure appears.

A head gasket failure creates a different type of contamination. The head gasket seals the combustion chambers, oil galleries, and coolant passages. When it fails, coolant can enter the oil and produce the classic milky or latte-coloured oil, sometimes with a creamy residue under the filler cap. Floodwater ingestion can introduce water into the crankcase in a similar way. Water and coolant dilute the oil, reduce its film strength, encourage sludge, and expose bearing surfaces to corrosion. Combustion gases may also pressurise the cooling system, making the engine run hot.

Oil contamination is progressive. A small amount of metal or moisture is much easier to correct than a failed bearing, warped cylinder head, or scored crankshaft. Warning signs include milky oil, a sweet coolant smell, oil pressure changes, overheating, a metallic sheen in the oil, or new knocking and rattling sounds. If you notice any of these, do not start the engine. Cranking or driving circulates contaminated oil through every critical surface.

What to do right now: if you suspect contaminated oil, leave the engine off and contact EEK Mechanical. We dispatch a tow truck 24/7 to collect your vehicle and transport it to an NZIFDA-certified workshop, where manufacturer-spec oil system recovery is completed. Recovery is fully itemised, and costs vary by vehicle, distance, after-hours, and contamination severity. See the rate card for itemised pricing.

Call 0800 769 000 any time. Our team will arrange collection, keep you informed, and help get your engine back to a safe oil condition before minor contamination becomes major wear.
