Milky Oil — What It Means
Milky, creamy, or brown-tinged oil on your dipstick or oil filler cap always means water or coolant contamination. There are no benign explanations. Here is how to diagnose the source and what to do.
Call Now: 0800 769 000What Does Your Oil Look Like?
Milky white / cream coloured
CRITICALCoolant or significant water contamination. Likely head gasket failure. STOP the engine — call immediately.
Light brown / coffee coloured with white froth
SERIOUSWater mixed with oil. Common after flood exposure, condensation build-up, or early head gasket failure.
Brown foam on oil filler cap only
MONITOROften condensation from short-trip driving, especially in winter. Less serious but should be investigated — can also be early head gasket.
Black or dark grey with metallic flakes
DAMAGESevere internal wear — metal particles in the oil from bearing or cylinder wall damage. The engine has likely already run with contaminated oil.
Diagnosing the Source
Is the coolant reservoir lower than normal?
Yes → Coolant is going somewhere. Check the oil — if milky, this is a head gasket. Call us.
Has the engine recently overheated?
Yes → Overheating is the primary cause of head gasket failure. The gasket may have blown during the overheating event.
Was the vehicle driven through deep water or caught in flooding?
Yes → Flood water has likely entered the engine. Do not start it. Call us immediately.
Is the milkiness only on the oil cap, not on the dipstick?
Possibly condensation from short trips. Still needs investigation — add a longer drive and recheck. If it returns, have it assessed.
Has the vehicle been sitting unused for months?
Condensation in the sump is common. A complete oil change is advised, and the source should be confirmed before returning to regular use.
The Golden Rule
If your oil looks milky, there is water or coolant in it. The source must be found and fixed before refilling with fresh oil. Draining contaminated oil and refilling without fixing the source means you will have contaminated oil again within hours. We diagnose the source as part of our service.
