Coolant in Oil: Head Gasket Failure Signs & What to Do

Milky oil often signals coolant contamination from head gasket failure or cracked blocks. Here's how to recognise the symptoms and protect your engine.

Finding milky, coffee-coloured oil on your dipstick is never a good sign. This discolouration typically means coolant has mixed with your engine oil — a serious contamination that can destroy your engine if not addressed immediately.

Coolant enters your oil system through several pathways. The most common culprit is head gasket failure, where the seal between your engine block and cylinder head breaks down. This allows coolant and oil to mix in ways they're never meant to. Cracked engine blocks or cylinder heads can cause the same problem, though these are less common. Sometimes floodwater ingestion can also introduce coolant-like contaminants into your oil system.

The symptoms are usually unmistakable. Your oil will appear milky or frothy on the dipstick, often with a tan or coffee colour. You might notice white or grey smoke from your exhaust, especially on startup. Your coolant levels may drop without obvious external leaks, and some drivers report a sweet smell from the exhaust. The engine may run roughly or overheat more easily than usual.

Once coolant mixes with oil, it destroys the oil's lubricating properties. The contaminated mixture can't protect your engine components properly, leading to accelerated wear, bearing damage, and potentially complete engine seizure. The longer contaminated oil circulates, the more expensive the repair becomes.

What to do right now:

Stop driving immediately. Do not start the engine if it's already switched off. Even a few minutes of running on contaminated oil can cause thousands of dollars in additional damage.

Check your oil dipstick and coolant levels to confirm the contamination. Take photos if you're unsure — this helps workshops diagnose the problem quickly.

Arrange immediate recovery to a certified workshop. Your engine needs a complete oil and filter change, cooling system flush, and repair of the underlying cause before it's safe to drive again.

If you've got coolant contamination, don't risk further damage by driving to a workshop. EEK Mechanical dispatches recovery vehicles 24/7 across New Zealand to collect contaminated vehicles and transport them safely to certified workshops for proper diagnosis and repair. Call us immediately on 0800 769 000 — we'll have a tow truck on the way while you're still on the phone.
