Bearing Wear and Head Gasket Failure: How Contaminated Oil Damages Your Engine

Milky or coolant-contaminated oil is a warning sign your engine is wearing from the inside. Learn how bearing wear and head gasket failure damage your engine over time and why early detection saves you money.

Engine oil does more than lubricate. It cools, cleans and cushions the moving parts inside your engine, carrying away heat and microscopic debris so components can spin freely. When that oil becomes contaminated with coolant or water, it stops doing its job properly and the damage begins long before you notice anything wrong on the dashboard.

Two of the most common sources of water in oil are bearing wear and head gasket failure. A failing head gasket can allow coolant to seep into the oil galleries, while worn bearings generate fine metal particles that circulate through the system and accelerate wear elsewhere. The result is often the same: oil that turns milky, grey or frothy, and an engine that is quietly degrading every time it runs.

Contaminated oil loses its film strength, which is the thin protective layer that keeps metal surfaces from touching. Without it, bearings, camshafts and cylinder walls begin to grind against each other. The water in the oil also promotes corrosion and can form acids that eat away at internal surfaces. Over time this leads to increased friction, higher running temperatures, reduced fuel efficiency and, eventually, component failure that is far more expensive to repair than the original problem.

The warning signs are worth learning. Check your dipstick and oil filler cap for a milky, mayonnaise-like residue. Watch for unexplained coolant loss, white exhaust smoke, overheating, or a sweet smell from the engine bay. If you notice any of these, the most important rule is simple: do not start the engine. Every additional minute of running contaminated oil pushes the damage further and increases the repair bill.

What to do right now

If you suspect water or coolant in your oil, stop driving and do not restart the vehicle. Contact EEK Mechanical and we will arrange a tow truck to collect your vehicle and transport it to a NZIFDA-certified workshop, where our team completes a manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery. The work is carried out properly in a controlled workshop environment, giving your engine the best chance of a full recovery.

Early detection genuinely matters. The sooner contaminated oil is identified and the system recovered, the less internal damage accumulates and the lower your overall repair costs are likely to be. Costs vary by vehicle, distance, after-hours callout and the severity of contamination, and every recovery is fully itemised so you know exactly what you are paying for. You can review our rate card for transparent, itemised pricing.

If you have spotted milky oil, coolant loss or any other sign of contamination, call us now on 0800 769 000. We dispatch a tow truck 24/7, so you are never left stranded, and our team will guide you through the next steps calmly and clearly.
