What to Do in the First 5 Minutes After a Misfuel — A Step-by-Step Guide
The first five minutes after a misfuel determine how much damage occurs and how much your repair costs. This step-by-step guide covers exactly what to do — and what not to do.
Step 1: Stop Fuelling Immediately
The moment you realise — whether at the nozzle or after finishing the fill — remove the nozzle and do not add any more fuel. Note how much wrong fuel has gone in if possible; this helps the technician assess contamination level.
Step 2: Do Not Start the Engine
This is the most important step. If the engine has not started, contamination is confined to the tank and fuel lines. Starting the engine draws contaminated fuel into the pump and injectors. Even turning the ignition to position 1 (accessories only) without cranking can prime the fuel system on some vehicles. Leave the key out of the ignition or in position 0.
Step 3: Move to a Safe Location if Possible
If the vehicle is blocking a pump bay and has not been started, push it to a safe area of the forecourt. Inform the petrol station staff. They have dealt with this before and can hold the pump bay while you arrange recovery.
Step 4: Call EEK Mechanical — 0800 769 000
Call immediately. Have your vehicle registration, location, and an estimate of how much wrong fuel was added ready. Our dispatcher will confirm response time and advise on anything you should do while waiting. 24/7 coverage across New Zealand.
Step 5: Document Everything
Photograph the pump (showing the fuel type), your fuel gauge, and the vehicle. This documentation is essential for any insurance claim. Keep the fuel receipt.
