Plug-in hybrids and misfuel risk: why wrong fuel still needs full recovery

Putting petrol in a diesel PHEV, or the reverse, can damage a complex hybrid system. Here's why full workshop recovery matters.

Why plug-in hybrids complicate a simple misfuel

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are often marketed as the best of both worlds — electric running for short trips, a combustion engine for longer ones. But that dual powertrain also means two fuel systems worth of complexity, and a single moment of distraction at the pump can put the wrong fuel into a system that is far less forgiving than a conventional car's.

The most common PHEV misfuel is petrol into a diesel hybrid, or diesel into a petrol hybrid. Either way, the contamination does not stay neatly in the tank. It circulates through high-pressure pumps, injectors, and fuel lines that are engineered to tight tolerances. In a hybrid, the engine may also start and stop unexpectedly as the vehicle switches between electric and combustion modes, which can push contaminated fuel through the system before the driver even notices a problem.

Why a quick fix at the roadside is not enough

It is a common misconception that a misfuel can be resolved on the spot. For New Zealand road vehicles, EEK Mechanical follows a different and more thorough process. A tow truck is dispatched to collect your vehicle from the forecourt, roadside, home, or car park, and it is transported to a NZIFDA-certified workshop. Manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed only at the workshop, where the correct equipment and procedures are available.

This matters for PHEVs in particular. A hybrid's fuel system is not simply a tank and a line — it includes components that can be damaged by even a short period of running on the wrong fuel. Workshop recovery allows the entire system to be assessed and treated to manufacturer specification, rather than leaving residual contamination behind.

The cost of ignoring a PHEV misfuel

Driving a plug-in hybrid after a misfuel can cause damage that goes well beyond the initial recovery. High-pressure fuel pumps and injectors are especially vulnerable, and repairs to these components can be substantial. The longer contaminated fuel circulates, the greater the risk of expensive, avoidable damage.

Recovery costs themselves vary by vehicle, tow distance, after-hours timing, and the severity of contamination. EEK provides fully itemised recovery, so you always know exactly what you are paying for. You can review the rate card for a clear breakdown of how pricing is structured.

What to do if you misfuel a plug-in hybrid

If you realise you have put the wrong fuel in a PHEV, the most important step is to avoid starting the engine or driving the vehicle. Do not attempt to move it under its own power, even in electric mode, as the combustion engine may still engage. Leave the vehicle where it is and call for help.

EEK Mechanical operates 24/7 across New Zealand. Our team will arrange a tow truck to collect your vehicle and transport it to a NZIFDA-certified workshop for manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery. Call the customer hotline on 0800 769 000 at any time, day or night.

For a clear, itemised view of what recovery involves and how costs are calculated, see our rate card. Acting quickly gives your plug-in hybrid the best chance of a full, trouble-free recovery.
