How to File an Insurance Claim After a Misfuel in New Zealand
If your car insurance covers misfuelling, knowing how to file the claim correctly makes the difference between a smooth recovery and a rejected claim. Here is the step-by-step process.
Before You File: Confirm Your Coverage
Not all New Zealand car insurance policies cover misfuelling. Before assuming you are covered, check your policy document specifically for "contaminated fuel," "misfuel," "wrong fuel," or "driver error." Some policies exclude it entirely; others cover it with an excess; a small number cover it fully as part of comprehensive breakdown cover. Knowing your position before you call the insurer avoids surprises.
What Documentation You Need
A successful misfuel insurance claim in New Zealand typically requires: the fuel receipt from the station where the misfuel occurred; photographs of the pump and nozzle; the job report from the recovery provider (EEK Mechanical can provide this in the required format); invoices for recovery, parts, and labour; and a brief written statement of the incident. Request the job report before the recovery is complete — it is easier to get during the job than after.
The NZIFDA Register as Evidence
From April 2026, every misfuel disposal event coordinated through EEK Mechanical is recorded on the NZIFDA National Misfuel Register. The register entry provides independent third-party verification of the disposal event — the date, vehicle, volume, and disposal method. Insurers increasingly accept register entries as authoritative evidence, reducing the risk of claim disputes over whether a proper recovery and disposal occurred.
Timeline
File your claim as soon as possible after the incident — ideally within 24 hours. Most insurers have a notification window of 24–72 hours for incidents to be reportable under the policy. Late notification can result in claim rejection even where the event itself would have been covered.
