Emergency Fuel Recovery on a Long Road Trip: What Happens and What to Expect
A misfuel on a long New Zealand road trip — far from a major town — is stressful. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you call EEK Mechanical to the moment you are back on the road.
The Remote Misfuel Scenario
New Zealand's spectacular road trip routes — State Highway 6 through the West Coast, the Haast Pass, the Desert Road, the Forgotten World Highway — run through areas with very limited service infrastructure. A misfuel in one of these locations means waiting for recovery in a place where the nearest workshop may be 100km away. Here is how we handle it.
The Call
When you call EEK Mechanical on 0800 769 000 from a remote location, our dispatcher will confirm your exact location using GPS coordinates if possible. We will identify the nearest available workshop partner and provide a realistic response time. On remote routes, this can be two to four hours. We will tell you the truth about the wait rather than give you an optimistic estimate that raises false expectations.
While You Wait
Stay with the vehicle. Do not attempt to start the engine. If you are in a dangerous location — on a narrow section of road, in poor visibility — contact Police on *555 for traffic management support. EEK Mechanical will stay in contact with you throughout the wait and will update you when the recovery vehicle has been dispatched and is en route.
The Recovery Process
We dispatch a tow truck to your location and bring the vehicle to our nearest certified workshop for the drain and flush. You will receive a full job report and NZIFDA register reference. Payment is made via the EEK customer portal — you do not need to have cash or arrange bank transfer at the roadside.
