Misfuelling a rental car is easier than most people think. The fuel nozzles at Z Energy, BP, Mobil, and Gull can look similar when you're in a hurry, and an unfamiliar vehicle makes mistakes more likely. If you've just put petrol in a diesel rental — or diesel in a petrol tank — the first few minutes matter more than anything else.

Rental companies in New Zealand generally treat misfuelling as a breach of the fuel policy in your rental agreement. That means the cost usually falls to you, not the hire company's insurance. Most agreements require you to return the vehicle with the correct fuel type, and using the wrong one voids that protection. You will typically be charged for the full cost of recovery, plus any damage caused by driving the vehicle.

The excess on a standard rental policy — often between low and high estimates — does not always cover misfuelling. Some companies offer an optional "full cover" or "zero excess" waiver, but even these often exclude fuel-related incidents or cap the reimbursement. Check your rental agreement carefully. If you have travel insurance, call your insurer to confirm whether misfuel recovery is included. Some NZ policies cover it; many do not.

If you have driven the vehicle on the wrong fuel, component damage is possible. Fuel pumps, injectors, and the fuel rail can be affected, and those repairs sit outside the standard recovery process. The workshop will assess these separately once the fuel system has been recovered to manufacturer spec.

What to do right now

Do not start the engine. Not even to move the car to a parking bay. Turning the key circulates the wrong fuel and turns a straightforward recovery into a much larger repair. Leave the vehicle exactly where it is — forecourt, car park, roadside, or driveway — and call for help.

Contact EEK Mechanical on 0800 769 000. We operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, anywhere in New Zealand. A tow truck will be dispatched to your location to collect your vehicle. Our driver handles tow loading and safety at the scene. The vehicle is then transported to a NZIFDA-certified workshop, where manufacturer-spec fuel system recovery is completed. We do not perform fuel work at the collection location — the specialised equipment and certified technicians are at the workshop.

When you call, have your rental agreement and location details ready. The a booking deposit applies (see our rate card — not the total job). Recovery is fully itemised, and you can review the complete breakdown on our rate card. A standard template recovery totals significant cost. If the engine has not been started, costs begin from from itemised charges on our rate card. Workshop labour, if you are looking for a rough guide, ranges from itemised charges on our rate card to significant cost depending on the vehicle and complexity. Line items include tow (from itemised charges on our rate card flag fall plus significant cost per kilometre), minimum four hours labour at significant cost per hour, disposal, replacement fuel, any required line items on our rate card line items on our rate card NZIFDA filing fee.

Notify your rental company as soon as practical. Most prefer to be informed immediately, even if you are arranging recovery yourself. Keep all documentation and invoices — your travel insurer or credit card provider may request them if you have supplementary cover.

Misfuelling is stressful, but it is manageable. The key is speed and stillness: stop, do not start the engine, and get the vehicle to a certified workshop through a proper tow-to-workshop recovery.
