Water contamination in engine oil is more common than many Kiwi drivers realise. Whether from a blown head gasket, coolant leak, or floodwater ingestion, even small amounts of water can turn your engine oil into a destructive mixture that damages bearings, pistons, and internal components.

Here are the five key warning signs to watch for:

Milky or frothy oil appearance is the most obvious indicator. Check your dipstick – healthy oil should be amber to black, never creamy or foam-like. This milky colour occurs when water emulsifies with the oil.

White or grey exhaust smoke during startup often indicates coolant mixing with oil. This is different from normal condensation vapour and will persist longer.

Coolant level dropping without visible leaks suggests internal contamination. If you're regularly topping up coolant but can't find external leaks, water may be entering the oil system through a faulty head gasket or cracked engine block.

Unusual engine noises like knocking or grinding can develop quickly once water contamination begins. Water doesn't lubricate like oil, causing increased friction between moving parts.

Water droplets or separation on the dipstick – you might actually see water beads or a clear layer separate from the oil, particularly after the engine has been sitting overnight.

What to do right now

First and most importantly: do not start or continue running the engine. Water-contaminated oil loses its lubricating properties immediately, and running the engine will cause rapid internal damage.

Check your dipstick again to confirm what you're seeing. Take a photo if helpful – our technicians can often provide initial advice based on visual evidence.

If you're experiencing any combination of these symptoms, especially the milky oil appearance, your vehicle needs immediate professional attention. The oil system will require complete draining and flushing, along with diagnosis of the root cause.
