The Most Common Vehicles Misfuelled in New Zealand — and Why
Some vehicles are misfuelled far more often than others. Data from misfuel recovery jobs across New Zealand shows which makes and models are highest risk and why.
Diesel SUVs Dominate the Misfuel List
By a significant margin, diesel SUVs are the most commonly misfuelled vehicle category in EEK Mechanical's New Zealand call record. The Toyota Fortuner, Toyota Hilux SW4, Ford Ranger, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, and Nissan Patrol account for a disproportionate share of incidents. This reflects both their prevalence in the fleet and the fact that their drivers are often not the primary registered owner — they are driven by family members, employees, or hirers who may not know the fuel type.
Small Diesel Hatchbacks and Sedans
The second most common category is small diesel hatchbacks — particularly the Volkswagen Golf TDI, Skoda Octavia TDI, and Mazda 6 diesel — where the diesel variant is visually identical to the petrol version and the fuel type is not prominently badged. Drivers who recently switched from a petrol version of the same model to a diesel frequently make this mistake.
Rental and Lease Vehicles
Across all categories, vehicles that are rented, leased to multiple drivers, or recently acquired are significantly over-represented in misfuel data. The common thread is unfamiliarity: the driver does not have an established habit of filling this specific vehicle with this specific fuel type. The fix is always the same: check the filler cap before every fill in an unfamiliar vehicle.
