Why Misfuelling Happens Despite Better Pump Labels in NZ
Even with improved pump labelling, thousands of Kiwi drivers still put the wrong fuel in their cars each year. Here's why it keeps happening and what's being done about it.
Despite fuel companies investing millions in clearer pump labelling and colour coding, misfuelling remains one of the most common motoring mistakes in New Zealand. At EEK Mechanical, we see hundreds of cases each year where drivers have put petrol in diesel cars or diesel in petrol vehicles.
The problem isn't necessarily poor signage anymore. Z Energy, BP, Mobil and other major fuel retailers have standardised their pump labels with large, clear fonts and consistent colour schemes. Green typically indicates diesel, while black or red indicates petrol. Yet misfuelling continues.
The real culprits are distraction and routine disruption. Many misfuelling incidents happen when drivers are using an unfamiliar vehicle, are stressed or tired, or visiting a different petrol station than usual. Rental cars are particularly problematic – drivers often aren't sure whether they've hired a petrol or diesel vehicle, and the fuel cap doesn't always make it obvious.
Modern pump nozzles have helped reduce some incidents. Diesel nozzles are deliberately larger than petrol nozzles, making it physically difficult to put diesel in most petrol cars. However, the reverse isn't true – petrol nozzles fit easily into diesel tanks, which is why petrol-in-diesel incidents are far more common and potentially more damaging.
Fuel companies are also trialling technology solutions. Some international stations use RFID tags that communicate with vehicles to prevent wrong fuel selection, though this isn't yet widespread in New Zealand. There's also growing discussion about standardising fuel cap colours to match pump colours.
What to do right now:
If you've put the wrong fuel in your car, don't panic – but absolutely do not start the engine. This is critical. Starting the engine circulates contaminated fuel through the system, potentially causing expensive damage to fuel injectors, pumps and filters.
Stay calm, don't turn the key, and call for professional help immediately. Moving the vehicle even a few metres can cause problems, so leave it exactly where it is at the pump.
