Water in Oil on a Long Journey — What to Do on NZ Highways
Discovering water in oil signs while on a long road trip in New Zealand is a stressful situation. Here is exactly what to do.
Signs to Watch for on the Road
On a long journey, watch for: temperature gauge rising above normal; white steam or sweet-smelling smoke from the engine bay; a sweet smell inside the cabin (coolant vapour); sudden loss of engine power; oil pressure warning light. Any of these on a highway suggests a cooling system or oil system failure may be developing.
Pull Over Immediately
If you notice any of these symptoms, pull over as soon as safely possible — the next exit or rest area. Turn off the engine. Allow it to cool for at least 20 minutes before opening the bonnet. Check the dipstick and oil filler cap when cool.
Call for Help

Remote Locations
